Importing ASCII Data

ASCII data can be imported via the import menu from the “Point Clouds” group (see ).

Right click on "Point Clouds" in The Project Data Tree and select "import item". This will bring up the standard windows file open dialog box,

Select "Point Cloud ASCII XYZ" as the format to be imported from the File dialog.  Navigate to and select the ASCII file you wish to import.

The data import dialog shows a preview of the file to be imported. You may use this to help you fill in the rest of the options.

Select the template which best suits the data. The template tell VRGS which columns are the coordinates and the colour values if present. Current templates are:

  1. X Y Z  = XYZ coordinates only
  2. X Y Z Intensity = XYZ and an intensity value
  3. X Y Z Red Green Blue = XYZ and RGB colour channels
  4. X Y Z Intensity Red Green Blue = XYZ, Intensity and RGB colour channels
  5. X Y Z Red Green Blue Intensity = XYZ,  RGB colour channels and Intensity
  6. X Y Z Unknown1-n = XYZ and n number of extra columns.

and select appropriate separators (comma, tab, space). If there are extra columns of data beyond those in the templates then you can define the number of columns of data in the "Columns" text box. VRGS will try and calculate this for you, so check the result. 

Skip Header: You can skip header lines if there are any - in the case shown here there is 1 header line giving column information which needs to be skipped on import.  Skip header should be 1 in this case.

Invert Z value - inverts the Z value, VRGS is positive for elevation, and negative for underground. 

Colour/Intensity range - if your data use 0-255 for colour values then set this to 255, and check the box.

Click OK to import the data. Import of data may be slow, but once saved within VRGS data loading will be much faster.
